We all know Father’s Day is a celebration honoring Fathers, Fathers Father’s, Step-Fathers and Father figures, but did you know its origin can be traced back to the early 20th century. The exact origin of Father’s Day has been debated throughout times and around the world. The first concept of the day goes back to 1908, when a church in West Virginia held a sermon to honor 362 men (mostly Dads) who had been killed the previous year in a coal mining explosion. This was the country’s first-ever event to strictly honor fathers, but this was recorded in the history books as a 1 time honor, at least in that community. The more prominent origin story revolves around Sonora Smart Dodd, a daughter from Spokane, Washington. In the US, Dodd is often attributed with establishing Father’s Day after being inspired by Mother’s Day and wanted a similar holiday to honor her father, William Jackson Smart. Smart was a Civil War veteran and a single father who raised his six children on his own after his wife passed away during childbirth. Sonora advocated for a day dedicated to fathers and their contributions. It was initially proposed that it be celebrated on her father’s birthday, June 5th.  After she’d petitioned her local community and government for a year, Dodd’s home state of Washington celebrated its first official Father’s Day on June 19, 1910, which happened to be the 3rd Sunday in the month.
Obviously, Dad’s aren’t exclusive to the US, it’s worth noting that similar celebrations honoring fathers existed in other parts of the world before Dodd’s efforts in the United States. For instance, in Catholic Europe, March 19th, the Feast of St. Joseph, was celebrated as Father’s Day.
Today, Father’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, typically on the third Sunday in June. The day serves as an opportunity to show appreciation for fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, and other paternal figures, acknowledging their love, support, and influence in their children
